Was good while it lasted
ESL Instructor (Current Employee) - Remote - June 5, 2023
Indeed Featured review
The most useful review selected by IndeedYou can work pretty much anytime and the working hours are quite flexible. However, I recommend working here to supplement your income and not as your primary job because classes can be very repetitive. At times, the lesson material doesn't suit the level of the students and in the three years I've worked here they've barely changed or improved them. They also recently decreased the hourly rate without any warning and laid off a lot of teachers. I now earn $300 less than I used to.

Jefes complicados
asesora comercial (Former Employee) - Bogotá, Cundinamarca - May 30, 2023
Poco tiempo disponible para la vida personal los turnos son asignados semanalmente y eso hace no tener un programa fácil para la vida cotidiana familia, hijos, pareja
Pros
Si le caes bien a tu supervisor te dan mejor base
Cons
Hay mucha rosca

Repetitive content but it’s a good company to work for
Online English Teacher (Former Employee) - South Africa - May 27, 2023
I enjoyed teaching on OE. Management is always available to helpful you with any issues. It’s great that you can work whenever you want to. The only problem is that the content is repetitive and the quiet season means competing for the be try few available classes. Overall it’s not bad.

Work from home
Academic Specialist (Current Employee) - Columbia, SC - May 14, 2023
I feel happy working here. The hiring process took a bit more than expected, but loved it. You have to be good at using Zoom. It certainly helps if you have previous teaching experience.

Teacher Layoffs?
Teacher (Former Employee) - Michigan - April 24, 2023
Recently laid off from here (not terminated for cause) due to lack of students. Overall, I enjoyed teaching the students, although as others have mentioned, it can be repetitive teaching the same lesson again and again.... I wonder how many teachers were let go?

Goood job
Teacher (Current Employee) - Durham, NC - April 6, 2023
Great place to work. I work 40 hours a week most of the time. Students are friendly. There is a chat where teachers can share tips and opinions. I like it.

Not a company for serious educators
EsL Teacher (Former Employee) - Home Based - April 4, 2023
Company used to be good and cared about education. Now...not so much. Little to no emphasis on pronunciation. Classes overfilled. No set pay date during the month. Pay is low especially considering how many students that can be put into class. Communication isn't open, which is ironic given the company's name.
Pros
Easy material to learn, teaching the kids is fun
Cons
Little emphasis on helping the kids progress in their English, low pay, teaching the same lesson for up to eight hours per day, company puts profits over people, the eternal gaslighting on Slack (you can't criticize the company), the company's preferred teaching methods are turning into the clownshow of other ESL companies.

Productive and fun workplace
Teacher (Former Employee) - California - February 21, 2023
A fun workplace with lots of support from other teachers and HR, however can be very draining and repetitive with teaching the same classes over and over.

I work online
ESL Teacher (Current Employee) - Remote - February 4, 2023
Open English is a great company, they have little course for you to do to help you understand your craft better. I like how the company always has students for you to teach and always gives reviews on how you can improve.
Pros
You always have students to teach
Cons
I think the hour rates can be increased

Flexible
Very flexible job if you travel a lot or want to stay at home. Management is responsive and the students make an effort. Lessons are prepared for you. The downside is that if you want to make a semi-decent income you would need to work long hours and same lessons repeat over and over again. Would like to see more variety and a pay raise would be nice as well as career pathway to monitor/manager.

Excellent company, the best people and big opportunities.
Regional Human Resources Manager (Former Employee) - Distrito Capital - January 18, 2023
Working at Open English has been the best work experience I've ever had. Lots of growth, lots of learning, lots of opportunities to grow, propose, create. Culture and values were breathed in each office. It was fun and challenging. The opportunity to contribute in each area and at all levels was a super enriching experience. Excellent culture, the best people!
Pros
The people, innovative processes, opportunities to propose and execute new ideas
Cons
Too many changes in short time to adjust to the great growth of the company

Solid with room to improve
Remote work since COVID, good support from HR and leadership. Health care options have high deductibles and out of pocket. Multiple projects and shifting priorities. Need to be flexible and willing to pivot quickly with little warning or communication.

Good if you're an expat.
If you're living in another country it's pretty great as you are paid in dollars and the exchange rates go a long way. You are pretty much responsible for everything and communication with management is great.

Flexible schedule
Online Academic Specialist (Former Employee) - Remote - November 26, 2022
What I enjoyed more about working at open english is the flexible schedule you can change every 3 months. You can also cancel or drop shifts as late as an hour before your class time and if it’s picked up by another teacher you are free from that responsibility but remember you are not getting paid for that class.

Worst teacher communicating company I have ever worked at.
Teacher Specialist (Former Employee) - Online, their office Miami Florida - September 22, 2022
I’ve been an ESL teacher for 4 years. I’ve been with 4 platforms with some at the same time. This company I was asked to work with adults. I normally work with children. It was a nice change for me. From the beginning I had a lot of miscommunication and mis information with them about how to fill out forms or how to get my Slack set up or how to get my schedule. They use Salesforce and that is a confusing program in itself. For a month I was getting my schedule wrong and getting in trouble. You don’t get a “place ticket problem here” form on the Teacher hub. You have to search for all the forms. I would get my reviews and I was getting excellent marks but getting feedback that my background was to “busy” I asked for permission on Day 1 if I can keep my background because I teach other platforms! They apologize then next review I get the same bad feedback! My last review I had %100 new student rate when overall average was %95. My personal %98 when overall %96. I was doing Awesome! I got a dollar raise too after 6 months. They would send me many many new beginner ESL students who were on level 0 or 1 and I would get amazing student feedbacks of me being their favorite teacher. Then I got fired 15 mins to my last shift of the day. It was for missing to many classes or being tardy. I normally screenshot everything but guess I missed some?! It was confusing. I couldn’t prove to them discrepancies that I had months before that they told months after! Word of advice: Great company for experience. I love the students. I love the curriculum but screenshot everything! Be very on -

Great workplace and collabrative teams
English Language Teacher (Current Employee) - Mazamitla, Jal. - August 29, 2022
It's a great company to work for and a fun job meeting different people throughout Latin America. I truly like working for Open English and only wish there was a higher level to achieve for a salary increase, like an L4 position...that would be great. :)
