High workload - too many deadlines, too many types of work to be done. Good work environment - good salary, great colleagues and easy going students. Frequent changes.

Good place to work

Good place to work with great facilities and staff but the salary does not equate to the rising prices of living and working in Dubai with a family at school

Started off a a high calibre college and a good place to work with great colleagues ended up as a challenging place to work and low employee morale

The Higher Colleges initially was a good place to work, however with management changes and general incompetency it became a frustrating and challenging place to work. I learnt a lot about the Arab culture and their work ethics. A typical day consisted of interacting with 30 students initially in the classroom and hangar, and then finding work placements for 200 students per year when my role changed.

Pros

Sunshine and general weather. Good salary. great work colleagues.

Cons

Poor management, lack of motivation students.

Job Culture

Oppressive environment with autocratic management.

Firstly remember where you are. You have to be very careful what you say and definitely never put anything in writing. There is an extreme culture of fear and a total lack of transparency in the college culture. Even if lower management and your line manager may be nice enough on a daily basis they will never make suggestions, voice faculty opinions in meetings or support staff in any way for fear of loosing their jobs. Staff are dismissed without warning and no reason ever given - there is no job security and no respect for faculty or admin staff. Secondly, if you are any kind of educational professional then you must remember to leave your standards behind. This can be difficult at first and will cause problems. The Emirati students may be friendly enough and easy going but he are not particularly hard working or studious. The expect full marks for everything and want to come and go as they please. if this does not happen they attempt bullying intimidation and will complain about you in an attempt to get you sacked. Remember they are the locals and have the power not you. It is a sharp leaning curve when you first arrive. Courses and the curriculum change all the time, sometimes mid-semester! Everything is always for a quick fix or for someone higher up to make some money out of the colleges. Never to do with teaching and learning and never with any consultation. Although like most places of work you will meet some great colleagues the working environment overall is toxic! My advice - stay well clear; there is more to life than money!

Pros

Reasonable salary and housing allowance.

Cons

Toxic environment. Callous, vindictive management. Hot and boring!

Too many changes going on right now at HCT

So many people are being let go from HCT and the management looks like they just want to replace everyone with new blood. Its a highly unstable place. They are saying they will adjust salaries in September, but they haven't even told people what those salaries are so if you don't like them, you cannot resign or you will lose your gratuity (you are supposed to give notice six months before). HR has been localized and they just do not work as hard as the old staff used to--quite frankly, it is like there is no HR. They never get back to you. In addition, the workload is just getting worse and worse. They are getting rid of all kinds of support positions so you are expected to do more and more.

Pros

Nice facilities

Cons

Bad management, very unstable right now

Nice place to get your feet wet.

Not challenging enough to continue working. Lots of changes in short time, and not exposed to management. Easy going work atmosphere. The female students are motivated and hard working.

Stay away, HCT has been going downhill for years but since Emaritisation of the management, very bad has got even worse

To sum up how they operate, in 2012, I was given a 2.5 year extension to my contract one day and a 6 month termination letter the next day. My college director and HR officer knew nothing about it. Things have got much worse since. HCT has lurched from being an excellent vocational training organisation to a very poor "university" and now it doesn't know what it is!

Pros

Most of the faculty in my college

Cons

Senior Management. Was always bad but with Emiratisation is now worse beyond belief.

Great job to start your career as a faculty. I worked there for seven years and I believe it was great experience. Once again, I recommend this job for those who have interest in coming to the Middle East.

Work Experiences

It is a five-day job, managing future leaders of the country to become successful business professionals. Having an individual to graduate and become an asset to the society is both an honor and a privilege. We all learn from colleagues and the students from content to personal advancement. Managerial skills are well utilized like planning, organizing limited resources, leading, directing and controlling to achieve the maximum potential of our output. Co-workers are composed of professionals from various fields and nationalities, hence, developing the inter-cultural and inter-personal skills.

Pros

Housing benefits

Cons

Long hours

Down the drain

HCT used to be a decent place to work, but since the appointment of new management the institution has declined rapidly. Absolutely no one trusts upper management any longer. Morale is extremely low and for good reason: forced overtime, increase in teaching hours, changing grades without consulting faculty, CCTV cameras all across campus, biometric tracking of faculty, the counting of work hours, and the requirement for attestation of even secondary school transcripts from faculty with multiple Masters and PhDs. Well functioning staff were replaced by locals who quickly decamped, leaving many important posts, such as HR officer, empty. Communication from management is typically through grammatically challenged email messages that have to be clarified by follow-up emails. Threats and bullying have become the norm. In retaliation for more than 80% of faculty failing to have their credentials properly attested and equalized, a process over which faculty have little control, management has not renewed the contracts of somewhere near 300 faculty without cause or explanation. Management is now desperately attempting to recruit replacement faculty at reduced rates. If you are one to whom they have spoken, be very careful.

Pros

Salary paid on time; professional colleagues

Cons

Everything else.

Fast-paced workplace with supportive team

Even though I haven't been with HCT for a long time, I've learnt a lot and I feel this experience will help me further my teaching career. I found my team, together with the head of the department, extremely supportive and friendly. Work week involved 20 contact hours across five classes of mainly female students. The most challenging part was related to frequent policy changes.

Pros

Supportive team

Cons

Frequent policy changes

Unpredictable and too often unprofessional work place.

Work week of 20 hours of teaching, plus prep time. Learn to fly under the radar. Co-workers were excellent. Students were wonderful. Abusive and unprofessional administration, including unethical, immoral, and illegal activities.

Pros

Pay and benefits

Cons

Big brother atmosphere

Working in the Gulf

It is a good place to work as long as you are familiar with the local culture and customs; the Middle East is attractive and at the same time, very different culturally to be able to handle it. There are three great incentives to go and work there: first, the international faculty body and the immense wealth of experiences and knowledge each teacher brings to the workplace. Secondly, the student body could be your most fervent fan if you find the right approach to them and make an effort to learn about their culture - it's very important for them. Thirdly, the pay and benefits are among the best in the world, and the UAE in particular is a spectacular place with many dream travel destinations just a step away. I enjoyed all three of them to the full, and would gladly go back or work with students coming from this part of the world.

Pros

Excellent collegial atmosphere, intensive professional training

Cons

Climate, management practices at times

A very hard working environment and several challanges.

With 20 hours of teaching, besides other 40 hours of research, meetings, curriculum writing, Exams preparation, invigilation, and marking, reply to students' e-mails, frequent changes in academic and administrative systems, it was a definitely very tiring challenging job.

Pros

Provided acomodation, free Health Insurance, free airline tickets once a year, education allowance for children, and an efficient PD and Training system.

Cons

Poor management, frequent changes, cold, and sometimes hostile work environment.
