Job SummaryWe are seeking a highly qualified and experienced Consultant Ophthalmologist to join a leading healthcare institution in the UAE. The successful candidate will provide comprehensive medical and surgical eye care services, diagnosing and treating a wide range of ophthalmic disorders while delivering patient-centered, evidence-based care. The consultant will collaborate with optometrists, ophthalmic nurses, anesthesiologists, endocrinologists, neurologists, pediatricians, and other multidisciplinary teams to ensure optimal visual outcomes and high standards of clinical excellence.
Key Responsibilities- Diagnose, evaluate, and manage patients with a wide range of ophthalmic diseases and disorders.
- Perform comprehensive eye examinations, including visual acuity assessment, slit-lamp examination, fundoscopy, tonometry, and refraction review.
- Diagnose and manage cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, retinal diseases, corneal disorders, uveitis, ocular trauma, and neuro-ophthalmic conditions.
- Perform ophthalmic surgical procedures, including cataract surgery, glaucoma surgery, eyelid procedures, laser treatments, and other procedures within the consultant's scope of practice.
- Interpret ophthalmic imaging and diagnostic investigations, including OCT, fluorescein angiography, visual field testing, corneal topography, and ocular ultrasonography.
- Provide emergency ophthalmic assessment and management when required.
- Develop individualized treatment plans and provide long-term follow-up care.
- Counsel patients regarding diagnosis, treatment options, surgical procedures, expected outcomes, preventive eye care, and postoperative management.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams for the management of systemic diseases affecting vision.
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation in accordance with hospital policies and international standards.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, clinical audits, quality improvement initiatives, and Continuing Medical Education (CME).
- Supervise junior physicians, residents, fellows, optometrists, and allied healthcare professionals.
- Participate in clinical research, teaching, and academic activities.
Requirements
Qualifications & Requirement
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree recognized by the relevant UAE health authority.
- Completion of an accredited residency in Ophthalmology.
- Board Certification or equivalent specialist qualification in Ophthalmology recognized under the UAE Professional Qualification Requirements (PQR).
- Fellowship or subspecialty training in an ophthalmology specialty (e.g., Retina, Cornea, Glaucoma, Oculoplastics, Pediatric Ophthalmology, or Refractive Surgery) is highly desirable.
- Eligibility for or possession of a DHA, DOH, or MOHAP Consultant License.
- Minimum 3–5 years of post-board/fellowship experience as a Consultant Ophthalmologist (or as required by UAE licensing regulations).
- Extensive experience in diagnosing and managing medical and surgical ophthalmic conditions.
- Experience performing advanced ophthalmic surgical procedures within the candidate's subspecialty.
- Experience working in internationally accredited tertiary hospitals or specialized eye centers is highly desirable.
- Demonstrated expertise in multidisciplinary patient care.
- Expertise in comprehensive ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment.
- Excellent microsurgical and clinical decision-making skills.
- Proficiency in ophthalmic diagnostic equipment and imaging technologies.
- Strong communication and patient counseling abilities.
- Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Commitment to patient safety, evidence-based practice, and continuous quality improvement.
- Leadership, mentoring, and teaching capabilities.
- Fellowship from a recognized international Ophthalmology subspecialty program.
- Western Board Certification or equivalent internationally recognized qualification (preferred).
- Experience with advanced laser procedures, minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS), and premium intraocular lens implantation.
- Active involvement in clinical research, publications, and medical education.
